Rumours had it last year that Facebook was planning to release it’s own custom smartphone into the market in early 2012 but nothing came out of it. Now, there are indications that Facebook may seriously be working with HTC to release the smartphone in 2013.

It is widely reported that Facebook is developing a “modified operating system” for the device, possibly a heavily customized version of Android, and also continues to focus on its mobile apps for iOS and Android.
A Facebook official statement reads:
“Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.”
I’m just wondering if this is a good move from Facebook at this time. Yes, Facebook has over 900 million users worldwide, still shy of the 1 billion mark and it’s reported that more and more people are accessing their Facebook accounts from their mobile phones but I don’t think Facebook already has a sure way of monetizing their heavy mobile usage.
Facebook recently launched Facebook ads on mobile and it’s too early to say if that would be a success or not but one research has it that it will be a great success even greater than the success Facebook ads is currently enjoying on the desktop version of the social network.
It’s reported by Techie Buzz that Facebook has hired some Apple iPhone engineers and some software guys also from apple to work on its phone hardware and software. They are also involved in talent acquisitions to work on improving its mobile apps and presumably its mobile operating system.
If these reports are anything to go about and Facebook is able to gain ground in the smartphone market, they should be able to make more money from their mobile users.
Now, I’m putting this to you reader. If this smartphone from Facebook eventually sees the light of the day, do you think it’s going to be a success or a failure considering the strong hold iOS and Android based phones already have in the market. We still have the Blackberry desperately trying to gain more market share and Firefox OS set to storm the market in 2013.
