There are two ways to create your back up:

1. Backup your Blackberry Messenger contacts locally on your media card
2. Backup your BBM contacts remotely to your email

In the case of theft, the media card is usually stolen with the phone since it is inside your phone. A way around this is to get another media card to keep your backup and pull out after backup to keep elsewhere or you simply use the second option to backup remotely to your email. If you want to backup other data you have on your Blackberry phone, use Blackberry Protect.

Remote Back-up is a feature that automatically backs up changes to your BlackBerry Messenger profile, display picture, contact list information and group membership to a BlackBerry Messenger server. If you register at least one email address with BlackBerry Messenger, you can recover such information if you ever lose, switch or transfer your device, provided the email address(es) continues to be registered with BlackBerry Messenger.
