Smartphones have quickly become our lifelines to the world as they enable us access to everything in one compact place. Millions of people are carrying them around every day stocked full of data ranging from unimportant miscellaneous junk to pertinent material that could give prying eyes access to our most personal or work-related information. While we keep our computers equipped with the latest security software and our bank account numbers discreetly hidden we rarely think twice about what we store on our phones. However with the high number of cell phones that are lost or stolen each year and the ease with which people can hack into anything with internet access, it’s time we start being a little more cautious about what we save to our phones. We can make our cellphones more secure by:
1. Having a passcode
While it may be annoying to have to type in a set of numbers or draw a certain pattern each time you want to open your phone that minor inconvenience can save major information from falling into the wrong hands. Most phones will completely lock up if someone repeatedly enters the wrong password, rendering it useless for anyone who shouldn’t be able to access it.
2. Not saving passwords
Like having to enter a passcode, entering your passwords for your email, bank account, and other important and personal sites may be a small annoyance that can save you big time. If someone is able to hack into your phone you’re practically handing them your life by having every sensitive piece of information stored in one neat place.
3. Having a “Wipe” feature
“Wipe” apps allow you to completely erase any private information that is on your phone quickly so that your personal data doesn’t become compromised. Some applications will allow you to also wipe your SD card as well, and some will allow you to wipe your phone remotely. Taking preventative measures like this ensure that no information falls into the wrong hands.
4. Keeping everything updated
Just like you frequently update your computer to stave off any pesky viruses, you should also keep current with any updates available for your phone. These updates are designed to keep your Smartphone in top notch condition, and when you don’t download them you open up your phone to being more vulnerable to attacks.
5. Being mindful of what you download
Before you download new apps or software to your phone make sure that you understand exactly what downloading that app can do. Do your due diligence and read through reviews prior to downloading and make sure that your information can’t be accessed unnecessarily.
A lot of people would be devastated by the loss of their cell phone, so minimize the blow by keeping all of the information on it as safe as possible. While no one wants to think that their phone will be lost, stolen, or hacked into, the reality is that taking preventative measures ahead of time is the only way to be certain that your information doesn’t end up falling into the wrong hands.
