10 USEFUL TIPS EVERY BLACKBERRY USER SHOULD KNOW

Here is a comprehensive list of 10 tips you must know as a Blackberry user. This tips will surely make your Blackberry usage experience better. You will type less while writing more and also get some tweaks to get some “hidden” features in your Blackberry smartphone.

1. USE THE KEYBOARD LESS

You can save yourself some time and stress with the built-in shortcuts in BlackBerry. Press space twice at the end of a sentence to get the full stop and an automatic capital on the next word. Instead of clicking on Alt + M to get the full stop.

Just type on in words like I’m and isn’t. Don’t bother yourself looking for the apostrophes (type im and the BlackBerry will correct it for you to I’m)
Others include abbreviations like ‘wel’ to get ‘we’ll’ and ‘il’ to get ‘I’ll’ and you can add custom shortcuts with Options > AutoText.

2. LET BLACKBERRY PUT SYMBOLS FOR YOU

If you’re typing into a field that expects an email address, don’t bother looking for how to type the @; just hit space and BlackBerry with put the @ in for you.

Also when you need the dot (.) In a URL just hit the space key and it will be filled in. This is applicable anywhere you type on your BlackBerry

3. FASTER SELECT

You can normally click the Blackberry options button and click select to select some text to copy and paste – but you can make a selection just by holding down the Shift key as you scroll the trackball.

4. CHOOSE DIALING OR SHORTCUTS

You can set Dial From Home Screen to Yes or No under Options > Phone Options > General Options. What is the implication of this? If you set it to Yes you can type a name right from your home screen to dial the number. If you set it to No you can type the first letter of apps on the home screen to open them.

Here are some examples:
(M for Mail, B for browser, C to compose email – and oddly N for Messenger, L for Calendar and U for Calculator).

This means that if you chose No above, you can open your browser right from your home screen by just pressing the B key. M for Mail, N for Messenger and so on!

5. GET DESKTOP VERSIONS OF WEBSITES

You can also try changing Browser Identification from BlackBerry to Firefox or IE to disguise your browser and force the full versions of specific pages to load instead of the simple mobile versions which might not bring all the features you need. When you do this, any site you visit would be led into thinking that you are browsing on PC using Firefox or Internet Explorer.
A downside to this is that hey might be slow to load or not load fully.

6. COLOUR-CODE MESSAGES

If you normally receive both work or business related and personal email on your BlackBerry, you can change the colour of either set of messages.
To do this:
Choose Options > Security Options >Information> Message Outline Colours and either Enterprise Messages or Other Messages.

7. GET REAL CONVENIENCE

Blackberry has got two ‘convenience K£ys’ – one on each side of the BlackBerry device. I know you’ve probably found one of them by accidentally pressing it and hearing that annoying ‘say a command’ message. Lol. It happens to me too; up till tomorrow. If you don’t use the voice command, you can change it to a feature you use quite often.

To do this:

Choose Options > Screen/Keyboard to change the buttons to something more useful – starting the camera, opening the music player, video player or launching any application you use often .

8. SAY A COMMAND FEATURE

The sound of “say a command” can be annoying but it has got it own use too. Voice command does more than voice dialing of phone numbers; if you want to check your signal and battery strength you can simply hit the voice command button and say ‘status’ or ‘check battery’ and ‘check signal strength’. Results will be shown to you!

9. ARCHIVE APPS, DON’T UNINSTALL

This is one of the shortcomings of Blackberry phones. Low memory of the device itself. Only the very latest BlackBerry models have enough memory to run many applications as well as keep them. There is a way around this though. When you run out of space, pick the ones you use least and archive them to your microSD card (this only works with apps from App World). Select the app in the My World sections of App World and choose Menu > Archive; archived apps have a green arrow on their icons and you can always click them to reinstall.
Note: You may have to restart to archive or restore an application.

10. “HIDDEN” HELP

Every Blackberry has a Hidden help section. The hidden ‘Help Me!’ screen shows the signal strength, battery level, device PIN, free space, space in use, IMEI, OS version, how long the BlackBerry has been on and some other info that can be useful for troubleshooting all in one place.

You can view this information by pressing Alt + Caps + H.
